Rebecca
âWhatâre you doing?â Rebecca asked. She could feel Jr. moving around, more than he usually did to get comfortable. Theyâd been sitting in the cave for a half a day at least, most of it in silence, and most of it still, except for the occasional break so they could relieve themselves. Though time seemed to pass normally, nothing about their situation appeared to get better. She tried to look on the bright side.
The cave was warm, having been heated year-round as the forest never dipped below seventy. What worried her was there was no shift in the lighting, no raising of the ambient temperature or slow, drifting sunbeams angled over the forest floor. Overcast was the norm, and everything was still.
Even when the sun should have come into its full glory and broken through the canopy, the area was dull and lifeless. As peculiar as it was concerning.
Jr. got up and stretched. Rebecca crawled to the edge of the cave and leaned back against the wall. She saw Jr. had his CD player in his hands, turning it over. He also pulled out his headphones, but before she could tell him it was okay to listen to his music, he snapped them in half. Rebecca was taken aback. He didnât look angry or upset, his eyes darted left to right, thinking, as he removed the remaining cable from its plastic housing. He then popped the player open and pulled the CD out, ran the rope through it and hung it outside the cave on a nearby branch. He had created what amounted to be a highly reflective marker. Smart kid.
She hadnât thought to mark the cave, but if she had, she wouldnât have used his headphones, instead sacrificing the laces from her own shoes.
âNow theyâll be able to see us,â Jr. declared, crouching down next to her. He looked tired, his face streaked with dirt and hair greasy and disheveled. She couldnât imagine she looked any better.
âGood idea. I would have used my laces.â
âI know, but how would you hike out of here, then? Besides, now you owe me a new pair,â he added slyly. âLet me look at your ankle.â
Rebecca nodded, shutting her eyes. It hadnât hurt for about the last hour, even when she moved. It just felt numb and swollen. She let Jr. take care of the business of pulling up her pant leg. He had thin, careful fingers and was gentle when lifting her leg to rest it in his lap.
She heard him gasp. But with the way he was sitting, she couldnât see what he was looking at. He hissed, as if feeling her pain.
âWhat is it?â She asked, twisting to see.
He paused longer than she liked before setting her leg down softly and saying, âItâll be okay.â
Her heart racing, Jr. slid aside, and she nearly fainted. Her ankle was a discolored, swollen stump. Black and angry red, like a turkey leg from the fair. Blood had pooled around the broken bone and when she touched it, the skin was hot and stiff like it was under pressure.
